Must Know Facts About E-Cigarettes Vaping 101 Vaping Prevention Resources HHS gov

E-cigarettes have been strongly linked to continued tobacco use and are not recommended for young people. Vaping can cause eye, throat, and nose irritation, as well as irritation in the respiratory tract. The nicotine in e-cigarettes can cause dizziness and nausea, especially in new users. E-cigarettes contain many of the same toxins as regular cigarettes, but they may have smaller amounts. Some brands also have much less nicotine than regular cigarettes or no nicotine at all.

To keep you and your family and pets safe from nicotine poisoning, the most effective approach would be to eliminate or ban tobacco-containing or nicotine-containing products in your home. If you’re interested in quitting smoking, your healthcare team is here, ready and looking forward to helping you. All tobacco products contain nicotine and are harmful to your health. All are technically capable of causing poisoning if taken in large enough quantities.

Research indicates that e-cigarettes may emit harmful substances, which means there could be health risks to the user and others through secondhand exposure. They are sometimes called e-cigs, e-hookahs, mods, vape pens, vapes, tank systems, and electronic nicotine delivery systems (ENDS). The harmful effects of CS and their deleterious consequences are both well recognised and widely investigated. However, and based on the studies carried out so far, it seems that e-cigarette consumption is less toxic than tobacco smoking.

Users have reported a growing list of potential e-cigarette side effects such as seizures, strokes, respiratory failure and bronchiolitis obliterans organizing pneumonia, or BOOP. The AMA promotes the art and science of medicine and the betterment of public health. The AMA has been a leading force to eliminate public smoking and warn people about the dangers of smoking, including secondhand smoke, since the 1960s.

Almost half (49.1%) of young people don’t know what to do with used e-cigarette pods and disposable devices. Daily use of EVPs increased from 2% in 2015 to 7.2% in 2019, greater than three-and-one-half times increase. Although the percentage decreased to 5% in 2021, it was still more than a two-and-one-half increase since 2015. The researchers speculate that the effects of COVID-19, which included lockdowns and remote schooling, may have contributed to the decrease in 2021 but cautioned that further research is warranted.

Compared with other race/ethnicity groups, Hispanics were the least likely to quit and Blacks were the most likely to continue using banned flavors after the ban. Respondents were both less likely to quit e-cigarette use and more likely to continue using banned flavors if they had used e-cigarettes for a greater amount of time or had weaker intentions to quit before the ban. Respondents who used e-cigarettes because of the flavor were more likely to continue using banned flavors (statistically significant for non-TM flavors but not for menthol). Those primarily using non-TM flavors before the ban were most likely to quit using e-cigarettes and more likely to continue the same flavor afterward.

But if a project is particularly stressful (or just slightly vexatious, any excuse will do), my sleek little e-cig is just sitting in my bag at my feet. Like a never-ending pipe, you don’t know when you’ve had enough, when you’ve had a cigarette’s worth of nicotine. One quick puff to slay your stress can turn into one puff every few minutes, then whenever I get the slightest urge. While saturated fat and alcohol still have their supporters, nobody is rushing to cigarettes’ defense.

Virtually all e-liquids used in Juul and other e-cigarettes contain nicotine. When the user puffs on the e-cigarette’s mouthpiece, the battery-operated heating element activates. The heating element vaporizes the e-liquid stored in the cartridge and releases an aerosol or vapor, which the user inhales. E-cigarettes come in a wide variety of shapes, sizes and designs, but they all work in pretty much the same way.

Since 2016, the FDA regulates the flavours used in the e-cigarette market and has recently published an enforcement policy on unauthorised flavours, including fruit and mint flavours, which are more appealing to young users [77]. However, the long-term effects of all flavour chemicals used by this industry (which are more than 15,000) remain unknown and they are not usually included in the product label [78]. Furthermore, there is no safety guarantee since they may harbour potential toxic or irritating properties [5].

The risk is greater from illegally manufactured or modified vape products, which are more common in states where marijuana remains illegal. However, even with legal products, vaping THC oil just one time can significantly harm your lungs. The risk of damage increases significantly if your vape product contains a chemical called vitamin E acetate. In 2019, an outbreak of severe lung disease from vaping was largely blamed on this vitamin. The results of this small study do not prove that vaping causes toxic metal accumulation in the body, but previous analyses have consistently found signs of toxic metals in e-cigarette aerosol samples and in the bodily fluid of vapers.

A P-value  ≤0.05 was considered to represent a statistically significant difference. You can buy them from specialist vape shops, some pharmacies and other retailers, or on the internet. As with all rechargeable electrical devices, the correct charger should be used and the device should not be left charging unattended or overnight. There have been instances of e-cigarettes exploding or catching fire. EBook files are now available for a large number of reports on the NAP.edu website.

Treatment adherence outcomes included attendance at monthly sessions and self-reported use of allocated and nonallocated products. Other outcomes included ratings of treatments, monitoring of adverse reactions and recording of serious adverse events. Participants received a 12-week supply of nicotine chewing gum (Johnson & Johnson) and a leaflet with product use instructions.

Elf Bar began production in 2018 and quickly became the No. 1 manufacturer of disposable vapes in the world. Beginning in 2015, Geekvape popularised ingress protection in vape builds and offer sub-ohm, MTL, and disposable vape devices. Uwell helped popularise pod vape kits with their Caliburn units and still manufactures some of the best sub-ohm tanks on the market. Voopoo’s stylish and high-tech devices are responsible for popularising sub-ohm pod vaping. OXVA deal almost exclusively in MTL devices, with their XLIM SQ Pro Pod Kit winning both our MTL Kit and Refillable Pod Kit Of The Year awards in 2023. Their devices contain remarkably long-lasting batteries while retaining light carry weight.

At minimum, this outbreak dramatically demonstrates the dangers of an unregulated market in inhaled substances with no premarket review for consumer safety. E-cigarettes are hooking a new generation on nicotine – putting millions of kids at risk and threatening decades of progress in reducing youth tobacco use. It’s a nationwide crisis of youth addiction, fueled by thousands of kid-friendly flavors and massive doses of nicotine.

They produce a vapor that’s inhaled deep into the lungs, mimicking the feeling of smoking tobacco cigarettes. E-cigarettes hit the market in the early 2000s and have since soared in popularity, especially among teens and young adults. Once believed to be a “safer” way to smoke, vaping is now considered a public health crisis by many health groups. In Sonoma County, 13 percent of 11th graders said they have used an e-cigarette, according to the Department of Health Services.

To address these concerns, in early 2020 the FDA announced an order that would stop most flavored vape pods (also known as cartridges) from being sold. Then, in April 2020, the agency began reviewing all U.S. e-cigarette products to determine which could stay on the market and which should be removed. The decision for each is based on whether the products offer more public health benefits (helping smokers quit) rather than harm (hooking youth on nicotine). Most are noncombustible which includes a battery, a heating element, and a liquid compartment, usually containing addictive nicotine, that is added to the e-liquid or included in the device.

The company had already suspended sales of most of its flavored pods in stores in November 2018, but continued to sell them online. In September 2022, Juul agreed to pay $438.5 million to resolve allegations brought by 33 states that the company marketed its products to teens by using young-looking models on social media and having launch parties, among other tactics. Young people are more likely than adults to use Juul or other e-cigarettes in the United States, according to the CDC. The lung injury outbreak has been followed by a wave of states and cities ordering e-cigarette bans in their jurisdictions.

The rise of e-cigarettes and vaping has raised concerns that another generation may become dependent on nicotine. The combination of medication and support is known to increase the chance of quitting for good. Support PAVeHelp us protect our kids from the dangers of vaping and tobacco use and the predatory behavior of the tobacco industry. More than 11% of young adults ages used e-cigarettes, the highest among all adults.

In 2019, nearly 28 percent of high-school students and 11 percent of middle-school students reported using e-cigarettes. About 8 percent of young adults ages 18 to 24 reported using e-cigarettes in 2018. In 2019, nearly 28% of high-school students and 11% of middle-school students reported using e-cigarettes. Many of those who vape were likely to report issues that kept them from being able to safely dispose of their used and empty e-cigarette products.

Recently, a study observed more than 6,000 teenagers between the ages of 12 and 15 to determine if e-cigarettes are increasing the odds for teen smoking. What was found was that e-cigarettes were the premiere choice for those who chose to smoke and once they began digiflavoruae, they also moved on to traditional cigarettes. Jacob is working hard to stay in control, he wants to be stronger than the addiction. He will openly admit he regrets the day he tried vaping and he swears he will never do it again. He recognizes his life was spiraling out of control and admits how difficult it was to quit.

These liquid pods also contain some of the same toxic chemicals found in smoke from traditional cigarettes, which is, in a word, poison. When tested, aldehydes, traces of metal, and other carcinogens responsible for playing a role in lung and oral cancers were present. While some adult users may have successfully quit smoking and attribute it to “vaping,” the fact remains that e-cigarettes contain nicotine, a highly addictive, dangerous substance.

Adverse reactions were infrequent and included primarily throat and mouth irritation in the EC and NRT arms and nausea in the varenicline arm. No serious adverse events were reported in any of the 3 study arms (Table 4). At the 3-month visit, participants were told that they could continue to use their products as needed, but would have to purchase them themselves.

In 2014, more than 9 of 10 young adult e-cigarette users said they use e-cigarettes flavored to taste like menthol, alcohol, candy, fruit, chocolate, or other sweets. In 2018, more than 6 of 10 high school students who use e-cigarettes said they use flavored e-cigarettes. Marketing and advertising of conventional tobacco products like cigarettes are proven to cause youth to use tobacco products. Scientists are also finding that youth who are exposed to e-cigarette advertisements are more likely to use the product than youth who are not exposed.

Some resemble other tobacco products, such as cigarettes, cigars, or pipes. You may hear them referred to as e-cigs, e-cigars, vapes, vape pens, mods, carts, tanks, dab pens, e-hookah, ENDS, or by their brand name, like JUUL or Puff Bar. The act of using an e-cigarette device is often called “vaping” or “hitting a vape”. E-cigarettes are the most commonly used tobacco product among youth. Vape flavors like mint and mango appeal to young people and mask the harshness of nicotine. The small, discreet size of vapes and e-cigarettes make them easy to conceal at school and home.

The liquid contains a mixture of nicotine, propylene glycol, glycerin, and sometimes flavorings and other unknown ingredients. Our compassionate providers can help both you and your child understand the dangers of vaping and provide resources that help people quit using tobacco products like e-cigarettes. E-cigarettes can also be used to vape marijuana’s psychoactive ingredient, THC.

Assuming that a conventional cigarette contains 0.172–1.702 mg of nicotine [51], the daily nicotine dose administered to these animals corresponds to 40–400 cigarettes for a 70 kg-adult, which is a dose of an extremely heavy smoker. We would argue that further studies with chronic administration of low doses of nicotine are required to clearly evaluate its impact on carcinogenicity. The study showed that the e-liquids of certain cig-a-like brands contain high levels of nickel and chromium, which may come from the nichrome heating coils of the vaporizing device.

New York State law restricts the sale of flavored vapor products intended or reasonably expected to be used with or for the consumption of nicotine, regardless of whether the nicotine is derived from tobacco or synthetic. Other electronic vapor products that use e-liquids include e-cigars, e-pipes, and hookah pens (e-hookah). Some have rechargeable batteries and changeable prefilled cartridges; others are disposable after running out of charge or e-liquid. Reported sales of cartridge products increased from $2.133 billion in 2020 to $2.496 billion in 2021; sales of disposable, non-refillable e-cigarette products increased from $261.9 million in 2020 to $267.1 million in 2021. The market share of disposable e-cigarette products increased from 52.0% to 57.8% between 2022 and 2023. Among disposable e-cigarette products, those with flavors other than tobacco accounted for 94.7% of the market in 2023.

E-cigarettes, vapes, vape or hookah pens, vaporizers, e-pipes, vape watches, and other electronic nicotine delivery products are electronic, battery-powered devices that heat a liquid and allow users to inhale the aerosolized liquid tpms sensor honda, also known as e-liquid or e-juice. Some look like a regular cigarette, but many resemble everyday products like pens, USB drives, highlighting markers, or colorful toy-like items. E-cigarettes are not safe for youth, young adults, and pregnant women, and can be dangerous for adults who use tobacco products. Electronic cigarettes, or e-cigarettes, are devices that use a heating element to turn flavored liquids into an aerosol that the user inhales. Most of these devices are used to deliver nicotine to the user, which is why another name for them are ENDS (electronic nicotine delivery systems). E-cigarette devices come in a wide variety of shapes, sizes, and styles.

Endothelial cell migration is an important mechanism of vascular repair than can be disrupted in smokers due to endothelial dysfunction [25, 26]. The decision to pursue a smoking cessation objective, even in such a controlled form, should be made only after considering national circumstances, along with the risk of uptake and after exhausting other proven cessation strategies. While the Family Smoking Prevention and Tobacco Control Act of 2009 prohibited the sale of most flavored cigarettes, the flavor ban did not extend to menthol flavored cigarettes or to any flavored non-cigarette tobacco products such as cigars, hookahs, and e-cigarettes.

Vaping hasn’t been around long enough to know what kind of long-term damage it might cause. Vaping works by heating liquid in a small device so you can breathe it into your lungs. The e-cigarette, vape pen or other vaping device heats the liquid in the device to create an aerosol. Mist from e-cigarettes contains particles of nicotine, flavoring and other substances suspended in air. You breathe these particles into your mouth from the mouthpiece, where they go down your throat and into your lungs. To truly help tobacco users quit and to strengthen global tobacco control oxva disposable pod, governments need to scale up policies and interventions that we know work.

Vitamin E acetate is a thickening agent often used in THC vaping products, and it was found in all lung fluid samples of EVALI patients examined by the CDC. To understand tobacco use patterns, we analyzed the prevalence of combustible cigarette use among those reporting current and daily e-cigarette use. In addition, we explored different patterns of current e-cigarette and combustible use, including sole e-cigarette use, dual use, and exclusive combustible cigarette use.

This article looks at the potential harms of vaping marijuana, how to identify them, and how vaping marijuana compares to vaping nicotine. The current study leaves many questions unanswered, but it joins a wave of concern over e-cigarette use among teens, which the US surgeon general described in 2018 as an epidemic. Very little research has evaluated the potential of metal exposure from vaping or the effect of certain flavors, making the long-term outcomes an even bigger mystery. Teenagers who regularly puff away on their vape throughout the day could be exposing their bodies to potentially toxic metals. Vaping worked in a month, and she’s been off cigarettes for more than two years. “I’m breathing, sleeping, and eating much better since I started vaping. My ‘smoker’s laugh’ went away, and I no longer smell like an ashtray.”

It is estimated that 4.5% among all adults in the United States and 11% among adults aged used e-cigarettes in 2021. While adults who switch from smoking combustible cigarettes to using nicotine e-cigarettes reduce their tobacco-related health risks, e-cigarettes products are not harmless and sustain nicotine dependence. In surveys, more than half of adults who vape nicotine plan to quit. Cytisinicline, if approved, could be the first prescription drug to help people who are ready to address their addiction to e-cigarettes. Achieve plans to conduct an End-of-Phase 2 Meeting with the FDA later this year to discuss future clinical trial requirements to pursue an indication for vaping cessation.

E-liquids come in different nicotine strengths, so you control how much nicotine you need to help with cravings and other withdrawal symptoms, such as feeling irritable and having low mood. In 2018 tire pressure sensor replacement, 8% of Pierce County 12th graders said they had smoked a cigarette in the past 30 days. The Alabama Tobacco Quitline is a free telephone and online coaching service for any Alabamian who is ready to quit tobacco or e-cigarette use. The data is “a real wake-up call and should prompt more action and awareness about the dangers of e-cigarettes,” said Mohinder Vindhyal, M.D., M.Ed., assistant professor at the University of Kansas School of Medicine-Wichita and the study’s lead author. Aug. 9, 2023, News Staff — New CDC data suggest that e-cigarette use is becoming more popular among young adults, even as their use of tobacco decreases. Among students who report e-cigarette use, approximately 7 out of 10 used fruit flavors.

Neither the air‐exposed rats nor those exposed to e-cigarette vapor using SS heating elements developed respiratory distress. In contrast, 80% of the rats exposed to e-cigarette vapor using NC heating units developed clinical acute respiratory distress when a 70‐W power setting was employed. Thus, suggesting that operating units at higher than recommended settings can cause adverse effects.

Then there are other pouches that contain synthetically made nicotine, which is made in the lab and is not derived from tobacco. I don’t know if it’s always apparent from the label whether it’s synthetic or not, but that’s a nuance that we’ve seen in our research. This trend was exacerbated by aggressive marketing, which often targeted younger audiences with social media campaigns and appealing flavors veiik cracker pod, leading to widespread use among teens throughout the decade.

We calculated the optimal puff duration of 3 s every 30 s based on published data.16–21 This allows time for the vapour to condense between each puff and prevented overheating of the device; 1.4 mL of ECL/nicotine-free ECL (nfECL) was vaped from each device. On completion, suction traps were normalised to room temperature and spun at 1500g for 10 min to collect the condensate. The liquid and vapour contain some potentially harmful chemicals also found in cigarette smoke, but at a much lower level. Find out more about e-cigarettes, e-liquids and vaping to quit smoking on the Better Health website. FDA approved tobacco treatment medications can help people trying to quit smoking. The FDA has never approved an e-cigarette as a smoking cessation device. Studies into whether the devices help people quit smoking have yielded mixed results. When Juul first hit the market in 2015, its vape liquid contained much higher levels of nicotine than e-cigs that had already been on the market. Each Juul pod contains as much nicotine as 20 regular cigarettes, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

The college was launched in 2010, when the Florida Board of Governors made a landmark decision authorizing FAU to award the M.D. After receiving approval from the Florida legislature and the governor, it became the 134th allopathic medical school in North America. With more than 70 full and part-time faculty and more than 1,300 affiliate faculty, the college matriculates 64 medical students each year and has been nationally recognized for its innovative curriculum. The Consortium currently has five Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) accredited residencies including internal medicine, surgery, emergency medicine, psychiatry, and neurology.

In the present review, we have attempted to clarify these questions based on the existing scientific literature, and we have compiled new insights related with the toxicity derived from the use of these devices. The e-liquid typically contains humectants and flavourings, with or without nicotine; once vapourised by the atomiser, the aerosol (vapour) provides a sensation similar to tobacco smoking, but purportedly without harmful effects [3]. However, it has been reported that the heating process can lead to the generation of new decomposition compounds that may be hazardous [4, 5]. The levels of nicotine, which is the key addictive component of tobacco, can also vary between the commercially available e-liquids, and even nicotine-free options are available. For this particular reason, e-cigarettes are often viewed as a smoking cessation tool, given that those with nicotine can prevent smoking craving, yet this idea has not been fully demonstrated [2, 6, 7]. While fewer people are smoking or starting to smoke than ever before, many are using other forms of tobacco and electronic nicotine delivery systems.

Vaping and smoking cannabis products is included in the definition of smoking under the MCIAA. Minnesota’s cannabis law and local ordinances have additional requirements regarding the use of these products in the indoor environment. We show a significant increase in cytotoxicity caused by the vaping process itself. Importantly, exposure of macrophages to ECVC induced many of the same cellular and functional changes in AM function seen in cigarette smokers and patients with COPD. While further research is needed to fully understand the effects of e-cigarette exposure in humans in vivo, we suggest continued caution against the widely held opinion that e-cigarettes are safe. Third, our model represents an acute exposure, rather than a chronic exposure system which is better suited to in vivo animal experiments.

Currently, e-cigarettes are not mentioned in the Illinois Smoke-free Illinois Act, which prohibits smoking in virtually all public places and workplaces, but some local ordinances do include e-cigarettes. E-cigarette aerosol is not harmless; it can contain harmful and potentially harmful substances, including nicotine and cancer-causing chemicals. While e-cigarettes typically have fewer chemicals than regular cigarettes, researchers found e-cigarettes present their own unique health risks and can increase the odds of chronic cough, phlegm, bronchitis, and asthma. Some cigarette smokers have replaced traditional smoking with electronic cigarettes (e-cigarettes) or vaping, thinking it is not as dangerous.

The study led by Dr. Vindhyal included data from a total of 96,467 respondents from the National Health Interview Survey, a Centers for Disease Control and Prevention-fielded survey of Americans, from 2014, 2016 and 2017. In their analyses, researchers looked at the rates of high blood pressure, heart attack, stroke, coronary artery disease, diabetes and depression/anxiety among those who reported using e-cigarettes (either some days or daily) and nonusers. Those who reported using e-cigarettes were younger than nonusers (33 years of age on average vs. 40.4 years old), according to the ACC release. Because the liquid solution is converted into an aerosol vapor, e-cigarette use is often referred to as “vaping,” rather than smoking. Electronic smoking devices (or ESDs), which are often called e-cigarettes, heat and vaporize a solution that typically contains nicotine. The devices are metal or plastic tubes that contain a cartridge filled with a liquid that is vaporized by a battery-powered heating element. The aerosol is inhaled by the user when they draw on the device, as they would a regular tobacco cigarette, and the user exhales the aerosol into the environment. Nicotine is a highly addictive substance found in tobacco products, including cigarettes, cigars, chewing tobacco, e-cigarettes, and pouches.

Vape aerosols are not just harmless water vapors that are inhaled and exhaled (as marketed). Vape aerosol exposure is unsafe and contains chemicals, metals (i.e., lead, nickel), and other particles that can interfere with lung development and health. Vape aerosols may also increase the risk of heart disease, lung cancer, and asthma complications. E-cigarettes are harmful for youth, young adults, and pregnant women. The nicotine in e-cigarettes is harmful for developing babies, and can lead to addiction and harm brain development in children and young adults into their early 20s. Although there is still much to learn about e-cigarettes, the evidence is clear that the harmful health effects of using e-cigarettes means teens and young adults should not use them.

Nicotine exposure damages adolescent brain development (learning, attention, impulse control), which does not end until one’s mid-20s. It also contributes to the hardening of the arterial walls, which in turn, may lead to a cardiac event. The aerosol, or “vapor,” produced by e-cigarettes is not a harmless, flavorful water vapor.

Findings show alarming statistically significant and clinically important increases of the daily use of electronic vapor products in U.S. adolescents. E-cigarette manufacturers introduced a new tobacco product that soared in popularity with little thought on how to responsibly dispose of the resulting tons of e-cigarette waste. Even though the majority of survey participants knew about the dangers to the environment presented by e-cigarettes, those who had vaped at least once were significantly less informed about the environmental impact of littering e-cigarettes than those who had never vaped.

E-cigarettes are battery-powered devices that generate an inhalable aerosol that usually contains nicotine. With a 399.73% increase in retail e-cigarette sales (excluding internet sales and tobacco-specialty stores) from 2015 through 2020, the environmental consequences of e-cigarette waste are enormous. Dr. Baldassarri says that e-cigarettes do help some people quit smoking, which is a good thing, but points out that there is no long-term data on the safety of e-cigarette use itself.

The numbers suggest recreational users who don’t have access to a dispensary are more at risk of developing EVALI than those who have access to a dispensary. What’s clear so far is that vaping is involved and vitamin E acetate is not the only culprit. Such findings are deeply concerning because compounds like lead and uranium are known to be harmful to human development. The study was supported by the National Institutes of Health, the American Heart Association, the Stanford Diabetes Research Center, the University of California Tobacco Related Disease Research Program and the FDA.

E-cigarettes are the most commonly used tobacco product among middle- and high-school students. In light of the EVALI outbreak, the CDC advises people who use e-cigarettes for smoking cessation to weigh the risks and benefits and first consider use of other FDA-approved smoking cessation options. Of those other flavored cartridges, fruit-flavored cartridges were the most popular, with sales increasing 600% from 4.7% of all cartridges sold in 2015 to 29.7% in 2018. Similar increases were seen in the sale of candy and dessert-flavored cartridges, as well as the sale of disposable e-cigarettes with these flavors. Vaping also reduces the amount of drug that is destroyed or changed into something else via the combustion process found in traditional smoking. The publication of their results closely follows publication of a trial of cytisinicline for e-cigarette cessation.

When youth and young adults expose their brains to nicotine, they are vulnerable to nicotine addiction, may have trouble paying attention and concentrating, and experience mood disorders and reduced impulse control. Nicotine may alter the way their brains function for the rest of their lives. E-cigarette marketing, including product design and packaging, appeals to a young audience. For example tpms sensor ford fiesta, many e-cigarettes feature bright colors and fruit, candy, alcohol or other flavors that youth find attractive and interesting.

As a non-profit organization, we accept no government or tobacco industry funding. E-cigarette companies have filed over 60 lawsuits challenging the FDA’s marketing denial orders. In addition, while the FDA denied marketing applications for all Juul products in June 2022, it subsequently put that decision on hold in the face of a lawsuit by Juul.

It should be noted that there are seven FDA-approved quit aids that are proven safe and can be effective when used as directed. To date, no e-cigarette has been approved as a cessation device or authorized to make a modified risk claim, and more research is needed to understand the potential risks and benefits these products may offer adults who use tobacco products. The mid-to-long-term consequences of e-cigarettes are not yet known, as it’s a new product and has been sold for less than a decade in the U.S. While much remains to be determined about these lasting health consequences of these products, we are very troubled by what we see so far.

The comprehensive review of the evidence finds that almost all of the 2.6 million adults using e-cigarettes in Great Britain are current or ex-smokers, most of whom are using the devices to help them quit smoking or to prevent them going back to cigarettes. It also provides reassurance that very few adults and young people who have never smoked are becoming regular e-cigarette users (less than 1% in each group). Youth use of e-cigarettes has surpassed youth use of regular combustible cigarettes in Delaware.
